Symmetry
We have been doing lots of geometry recently here in 314. Our latest endeavor has been to create shapes with line and rotational symmetry. Here is our latest Math Movie Minute showing some of our creations. If you want to make a symmetrical shape at home follow these simple steps.
1. Fold a piece of paper in half.
2. Pinch the folded edge and cut into the fold and around in whatever patter you choose.
3. Unfold and admire your symmetrical shape.
*To make a figure with 180 degree rotational symmetry, fold the paper in have and then in half again. Pinch the middle corner of your folds and then cut your pattern. Have fun!

Algebra Part 2
Students spent this week in math using what they learned about equations to make input/output tables and graph their data on coordinate grids!
Toothpick Challenge!
What's the pattern? Students made tables showing how many toothpicks it takes to make 1 triangle..2,3,4...
They discovered the pattern could be described as 2x+1=y.
So how many toothpicks does it take to make 125 triangles?
Real World Algebra!
Students created real world situation problems, tables showing possible outcomes, and graphed their data. What do you get when you graph any function table?
A straight line!
Here are the winners of our 100s Chart Game where students made up equivalent equations for a number 1-100 that they selected.

Algebra
We have been hard at work in our algebra unit. Here are some of the learning activities we have done so far.
Equation Wheels: Match the variable value with the correct equation.
Dorito Math: Use the Order of Operations to simplify equations.
Inverse Operations Videos: We used the first video as a teaching tool and then created our own teaching tools for others!
Menu Math or Algebra Gardens: Students wrote expressions based on their homemade artwork and price lists!
Web Resources: Check out these links for more practice.
Patterns
Writing Equations
Study Jams: Multiplication and Division Equations
Study Jams: Addition and Subtraction Equations
Also check out other games and activities at our Blackboard Classroom!

Cougar Challenge
We are switching things up in Fifth grade! We have built 5 of the toughest, strongest, math-mightiest, ELA-mazing color teams to compete with their coaches for the PASS prize. Teams will spend time in training each week and use their brain power to earn points toward their team total. May the best color win!
Meet the Coaches!
Blue Team- Mrs. Oliver ELA
Orange Team- Mr. Robinson ELA
Green Team- Mrs. Howe Math
Yellow Team- Mrs. Hoft Math
Purple Team- Mrs. Davis Math/ELA
